Sheriff in North Dakota Territory
Louis Philippe LeMay was the son of Michel LeMay & Pelagie Monfette.
He was born in Canada and moved to Minnesota in the 1850’s.
He married a woman from Ireland named Ellen Layden (last name was not known exactly).
They lived in Mendota, Minnesota and in Pig’s Eye (later St Paul) in the 1860’s.
In the 1880’s many of the LeMay family moved from Mendota to St John Tarsus, North Dakota.
Louis Philippe LeMay was elected Sheriff in Bottineau County just before North Dakota became a state.
When North Dakota became a state, he was removed from office.

It was a time when the French speaking people were being replaced by northern Europeon immigrants.
