On April 21st, 2002 the four sacred oaks were replanted at St.
Peters Church Grounds in a snow storm. We would like to
gather at 1 p.m. on April 27th before our community meeting
and language workshop to remember this occasion. We hope
to see you there.
GAMBLING
REPORT
Our
new site "Keenan's" on W. 7th St in St. Paul has been doing
pretty good. Receipts were down in February, but seem
to be getting better lately. Gambling reports from February
and March will be available for review at the April 27th meeting.
ECONOMIC
DEVELOPMENT/GOVERNANCE
GRANT SUBMITTED TO ANA
Another
grant is being submitted to the Administration for Native
Americans. If we receive this grant, it will open the
door to self-sufficiency and help continue the federal recognition
process. Included in the grant will be the development
of a Dakota History walking tour of the sites in the area.
It will be the first tour to be strictly devoted to the Dakota
history from the Dakota perspective. We would also like
to develop a Dakota Trading Post with native crafts, music,
books, and other items for sale. We are also looking
at adding some pre-packaged food items as well. We are
very excited about the possibilities this grant can
offer the community. It will help toward our goals of federal
recognition, educating the general public about the history
of the area to create a better understanding between cultures,
and preserving and protecting the Dakota cultural heritage.
MEMBERS
TO PARTICIPATE IN TIME TRAVEL PROGRAM AT SIBLEY HOUSE We had a visit
from some people from the Galumph Theater located in South
Minneapolis. They had been contacted by the Swedish
American Institute to develop a time travel program involving
a Swedish immigrant group and a Dakota group interacting in
1857. They chose the Sibley House as the site to conduct
this program. Michael Scott and Beverly Scott will be
representing the Mendota Dakota . The fifth grade class
from the Four Winds School will be the time travelers.
They will be divided into Swedish and Dakota groups, given
costumes appropriate to that time, and also be given names
according to the group they are in.
This event will occur on May 6th and 7th from 8:30 a.m to
12:30 p.m. and is designed to introduce the students to the
inter-cultural relationships that occurred prior to the 1862
Dakota uprising.
