Sunday, June 3, Drop-in program, 2–4 pm
Meet
David Vavreck, one of America's few remaining horn workers, see a wide variety
of horn products, and try using a horner’s hand tools including a pump
drill. Until the invention of synthetics in the later 19th
century, animal horn was used as a raw material in the manufacture of thousands
of products such as combs, spoons, powder horns, and more. House tours
1:30 – 4 pm. Suggested
donation $2, youth through high school and Pond Dakota Heritage Society members
are free.
The historic Pond house is located in Pond
Dakota Mission Park, 401 East 104th St., Bloomington, between Portland and

Release Party: A Thrilling Narrative of Indian Captivity

Celebrate
the release of the book that won PDHS’s first Legacy Grant, A Thrilling
Narrative of Indian Captivity: Dispatches from the Dakota War by Mary
Butler Renville. The book is a unique collaboration of its non-Dakota editors,
Carrie Reber Zeman and Kathryn Zabelle Derounian-Stodola, with Dakota scholars
Glenn Wasicuna and Gwen Westerman, who translated the letters written by John
Baptiste Renville. The four members of the book team will be joined by special
guest Alan R. Woolworth. The book will be available for purchase and
signing. Refreshments will be served.

Philip Sousa Memorial Band Outdoor Concert – FREE!

Directed
by the multi-talented Mr. Scott Crosby, the band has been entertaining local
audiences for 40 years, providing great crowd-pleasing music. Volunteer
musicians in period costume from all over the Twin Cities recapture the spirit
of bands at the turn of the twentieth century. Bring a lawn chair or
blanket. Delicious ice cream will be for sale.
