Corn is the grain of civilizations. Bred in Native America it grew from the Andes to the coastal plains, from wet Florida to southwest deserts. Corn never grows wild and survives only under human care notes Jack Weatherford in Indian Givers. Developed from a grass to grow inside a husk, corn is protected from pests and weather but must be pollenated by human care. Potato, tomato, beans, corn and squash “The Indians gave the world three-fifths of the crops now in cultivation,” Weatherford reminds us.

All welcome. Dress for the weather, especially sturdy footwear. We celebrate the full moon in all weather however the length of the walk depends on conditions. If it’s really cold or wet it’s a quick 10-minutes to the spring outflow gurgling out from under the limestone bedrock Spring House built in the 1880s to supply potable water to Fort Snelling.
This gathering is free and open to the public.
