New Indigenous CD – Best Yet
August 19th marks the day the new Indigenous album, “Broken Lands”, hits store shelves throughout the nation. The CD consists of songs written by guitar phenom and Nakota “Sioux” music hero, Mato Nanji, and his wife, Leah; with band members of the Kris Lager Band, to make the recording Mato’s best so far.
The compilation, recorded at Winterland Studios in Minneapolis, MN and released through the Vanguard Records music label, is expertly produced by Jamie Candiloro, bringing a phenomenal listening experience and sure to garner music awards through the coming year.
An Indigenous “Broken Lands CD Release Party” is open to the public and will take place August 22, 2008 at the Sioux Falls Orpheum Theater starting at 8:00 p.m.

“Battle River” Releases New CD

The world famous champion Indigenous “Big Drum” Singing Group, “Battle River” of the Red Lake Ojibwe Nation near Red Lake Minnesota, recently released a new music CD featuring some of the best Battle River music put out thus far.

The CD consists of primarily straight pow-wow songs, the signature trademark of Battle River, with one “Honor Song”, one “Sneak Up”, and on “Side Step” to complete the eleven track album.

Battle River has won numerous singing contest championships throughout their singing career, which started in 1999; such venues included Schemitzen Connecticut World Championships and Bismarck United Tribes International Singing and Dance Championships.

This latest CD, the Battle River’s fourth, consists of songs written primarily by the groups three brothers, Keveon, Kevin, and Mac Kingbird – the anchors of the group. The brothers are sons of famed Ojibwe singer, Mac Kingbird, who was well-known throughout the pow-wow world and region for his beautiful singing voice and knowledge of indigenous song and dance.

The latest CD was recorded by “Wonksheek” Music Company of Fargo, ND, direct relatives of the Kingbird boys through the drum group’s matriarch, Vera DeCorah Kingbird.

Vera Kingbird is the daughter of the late Henry Thomas DeCorah of the Ho-Chunk Nation “Thunder Bird Clan.” Henry was a World War I war hero and also very well known on the Pow-wow Trail. Henry’s wife was Marie Crowe of Santee Dakota heritage, who taught the Dakota language for many years at the University of Minnesota.
